William Smith was born in Culpepper, Virginia. He and
his wife, Lucy Wright, married in 1786 and moved to
the Stoney Point area in 1793. He built a store and
got a post office in 1808 in the same location as the
present Stoney Point Grocery. Although William Smith
died in 1824 his son, Joel Smith, succeeded him as postmaster
of the Stoney Point Area.
William Smith started the Stoney Point Mansion in 1818.
It was not complete when he died in 1824, his son Joel
finished the home in 1829. William Smith's daughter
Anna Smith (1788-1839) married John Fooshe and they
lived in a house which was on the site of the Stoney
Point Golf Clubhouse. Another daughter Amelia Smith
married George F. Anderson and they lived in a house
located on the present Stoney Point number 5 hole.
Joel
Smith (1798-1855) lived in the Stoney Point Mansion
and was one of the wealthiest men in the state outside
of Charleston at the time of his death. He owned 1,883
acres of the land, part of which is the present Stoney
Point Development. He served several terms in the
state legislature beginning in 1835. The executor
of the Joel Smith estate invested his estate in confederate
bonds which became worthless. His large plantation
was broken up. (Information obtained through John
C. Scurry, Jr., Atty.)
Today,
Stoney Point on Lake Greenwood is a Golfer's Paradise.
The community has been master planned by three of
the original founders and developers of Palmetto Dunes
on Hilton Head Island to provide owners and members
with a truly gracious lifestyle. The design theme
of Stoney Point is to create an outstanding residential
community and classically beautiful golf course.
